Autumn is the perfect time to prepare for winter and give your vertical gardens the best conditions for the colder months. As part of the PROVER project, weβre sharing tips for vertical gardening enthusiasts on how to protect their plants and enhance soil quality for upcoming seasons. Here are a few practical tips:
Soil Preparation β Before the cold fully sets in, enrich the soil with organic compost or humus to boost its fertility and support healthy root development. Lightly mix it in, and remove any remaining dead plants or weeds.
Plant Protection β Plants growing vertically during the autumn months can be sensitive to temperature changes. We recommend using agro-textile covers or improvised protective layers to shield them from cold air while still allowing them to breathe.
Check the Irrigation System β Reduce the frequency of watering, as plants require less water at lower temperatures. However, ensure the soil doesnβt become too dry.
Autumn Plants for Vertical Gardens β If youβre considering seasonal planting, try adding winter greens like lettuce, arugula, or spinach, which tolerate lower temperatures well. These plants can thrive in vertical gardens with minimal protection.
Thank you for following the PROVER project, and we hope these tips will help your vertical gardens thrive through winter and be ready for a new growing season!
